Evolution of a Quickie Flyer
I’m organizing a comics reading of indy-fantasy stories in the vein of Elfworld called Tales on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Comics Relief. Realizing that there was only two short weeks before the show, I got to work last night on a quick lil’ flyer, both for handbills (B+W) and the web (color).
Without much time to go, I began working on an inked version right away, resulting in some layout problems that could have been easily avoided had I spent even even fifteen minutes penciling or otherwise working things out. At this stage I realized this wasn’t gonna work:
So I busted out another piece of paper and spent a bit more time making sure my lettering was gonna fit, etc. The wizard and elf-babe came out much nicer, too. Since Tales features stories from Elfworld and other indy-oriented fantasy comics (Trevor Alixopulos, Ben Costa + J.R. Parks, David Enos, Ben Catmull, and myself), I wanted the characters to have a bit of a fantasy-hipster vibe, I dunno know if it worked or not. The new fancy title treatment was inspired by Ben Caldwell’s Wonder Woman logo from Wednesday Comics (by the way, just got that over the weekend and it has some very good stuff in it, reccomended!).
Finally I threw the whole thing into Photoshop and did some color magic. Given the fantastical nature of these stories I though some rainbow gradient action was appropriate! Plus the venue’s in Berkeley, after all.
That’s it! Come by and see us read if you are in the East Bay on Dec. 11, and don’t forget to come to the East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair at Berkeley City College from 10am-4pm, too!
